Lancers Defeat TCU, Secure Basketball’s First-Ever Power 5 Win
11/27/2021 2:47:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MORAGA, CA - California Baptist University women's basketball made more history on Saturday afternoon after defeating TCU, 91-77. The victory marked the first-ever win over a Power 5 opponent in CBU basketball history. The result improves the Lancers record to 4-1 on the season while the Horned Frogs drop to 2-3.
Despite boasting a roster that includes a player who landed on the Wooden Award Preseason Watch List in Lauren Heard, the duo of Ane Olaeta and Caitlyn Harper were too much for the Frogs to overcome. Olaeta record a double-double with 25 points and 10 assists while Caitlyn Harper dropped 24 points on the Frogs.
CBU got off to a hot start, leading TCU 10-2 and 18-9 during the first quarter. The Frogs would heat up as the period continued, but still finished the first 10 minutes down 25-23 to the Lancers. Efficiency was the name of the game in the second quarter as CBU shot 53.8% (7-13) from the floor and 50% (4-8) from three-point land to bring a 44-38 lead into halftime.
The Lancers caught fire in the third quarter, using an early 16-0 run to build a 20-point lead which allowed CBU to roll into the fourth quarter already holding a double-digit lead. TCU would get the game down to seven points early in the fourth, but CBU responded with a 7-0 run in roughly one minute of action, building an insurmountable lead that would get them to the final buzzer.
Harper and Olaeta would combine to score 34 points in the second half alone, nearly equaling the total of the Horned Frogs, who scored 39 points in the same timeframe. As a team, the Lancers were seeing the basket clearly, shooting season-bests from the field at 52.3% (34-65) and from beyond the arc at 47.1% (16-34).
UP NEXT
The Lancers will be back home for their next contest, a 2 p.m. game on Thursday, Dec. 2, against Pepperdine. The Waves currently sit at 2-2 on the season, but will take on Cal State Fullerton and CSU Bakersfield ahead of Thursday's game in Riverside. The Lancers and Waves have split a pair of games previously, the Pepperdine taking a WNIT victory in March 2019 before CBU avenged the loss with a 75-67 win in Malibu last season.
