Olaeta Reaches Assist Milestone as Lancers Hang On Against Surging Waves

RIVERSIDE – The California Baptist University women's basketball team was tested by a persistent Pepperdine squad on Thursday afternoon but held off the Waves to claim a 63-57 win. CBU moves to 5-1 on the season while Pepperdine falls below .500 at 3-4. The Lancers push their home win streak to 17 in a row now, with just San Diego State left on the home, non-conference slate.
Ane Olaeta topped 700 career assists during the game while also dropping a deceivingly cool 20 points. Olaeta becomes the first Lancer in program history to ever breach the 700-assist mark after having claimed the all-time leader mantle from former leading disher Kamille Diaz during the Lancer win over TCU last Saturday.
Caitlyn Harper was the second-leading scorer in the game as her 16 points and six rebounds helped pace the Lancers throughout the contest. Dorcas Wu showed up with the late-game heroics, as her fourth-quarter efforts helped close out the Waves.
CBU came out firing, opening up an 8-1 lead by the under-five media timeout. The Waves regrouped well, tying up the game at 10-10 by the two-minute mark. The Lancers closed out strong with five unanswered points to lead 15-10 at the first buzzer.
The Lancers would shoot 45.5% from the field in the first half as Olaeta went into halftime as the lone player on either squad in double-figures with 15 points.
After an even third quarter, Pepperdine made it exciting late, going on a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to bring down the Lancer lead to just four. Caitlyn Harper would squash that run with her first three-pointer of the game with three-and-a-half minutes left in the game to put CBU back on top 58-51.
The Waves did not stop pushing and went on another run, this time 6-0 to get within one point with under a minute to play. After coming up with a monster block just before, Dorcas Wu settled into the corner just in front of her own bench and buried a three-pointer with 13.6 seconds left, sealing the victory for her Lancers.

The Lancers will host back-to-back home games for the first time this season when San Diego State comes to town for a 6 p.m. tip on Wednesday, Dec. 8. The Aztecs currently sit at 4-4 this season after dropping their last three in a row to Ole Miss, Furman, and the University of San Diego.
