CBU Drops Tough Five-Set Match at Chicago State
11/4/2021 8:48:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
CHICAGO – California Baptist University volleyball battled back from a tough spot but came up just short of a comeback win at Chicago State on Thursday night.
The Cougars pulled out a five-set win (22-25, 29-27, 25-17, 22-25, 15-13) on Thursday night, with the help of a timely successful video review challenge. The Lancers move to 13-9 overall and 8-4 in the Western Athletic Conference and fall back into a tie for first place in the league standings with Grand Canyon and NM State.
Chicago State improves to 15-8 and 7-4 in the WAC to give it sole possession of fourth place in the West.
Thursday was a heartbreaking result for multiple reasons. CBU was thinking sweep when it came out and won set one 25-22 and then appeared to take set two on a score of 27-25. The Cougars challenged the set point and got the call reversed to force a 26-26 tie and prolong the set before eventually winning it, 29-27.
CSU rode the momentum to a 25-17 win in set four before the Lancers rebounded with a 25-22 win in set four to force a deciding game.
WAC STANDINGS UPDATE
With two matches left in the conference season, CBU is tied again in the WAC standings with NM State and Grand Canyon with identical 8-4 conference records.
The Aggies and Lopes are home for their final two WAC matches this year. NM State hosts Utah Valley, while GCU will face Dixie State on Saturday. Both of their final conference matches come against Chicago State, with the Lopes hosting the Cougars Thursday and NMSU doing so on Saturday.
The Lancers' final two matches of the regular season are on the road in Utah, first with a trip to Orem to face Utah Valley Thursday at 4 p.m. Pacific and then a visit to Dixie State Saturday at noon.
