LA JOLLA – Despite trailing by six at the half, California Baptist University women's basketball stayed focused on the task and claimed a late victory over UC San Diego, 74-73, on Tuesday. The Lancers led for less than eight minutes total in the game, but showed determination and perseverance in a gritty, come-from-behind win.
Ane Olaeta led all scorers with 21, but had a fantastic all-around game with five assists, five rebounds and three steals. Caitlyn Harper finished the game with 15 points, five boards and two blocks, but most importantly, made her only free throw of the game with just over 10 seconds left to play to reach the final score line.
Dorcas Wu reached double-digits for the second game in a row with 11 points, as fellow starter Georgia Dale nabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to go with three assists and two steals.
As a unit, CBU had an off game from beyond the arc, shooting just 28.2 percent (11-39), but made up for it by forcing a season-high 24 turnovers on the defensive end. Over half of those turnovers (13) were steals by the Lancers, leading directly to 25 points. The Tritons recorded just five points off turnovers, but helped offset that stat by outscoring CBU 25-19 in bench points.
The second half saw CBU much more aggressive defensively, pushing the Tritons out of their comfort zone with a strong, full-court press. Offensively, the Lancers went on a 17-4 run during a four minute span in the fourth quarter, putting CBU up 65-61 at that point.
The two teams would trade buckets for the final few minutes, but CBU never lost control of the lead after that run. Olaeta and Harper finished the game scoring the Lancers' final nine points to seal the victory.
