WBB PREVIEW: Lancers Continue Road Trip, Take On UC San Diego and Santa Clara

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University women's basketball closed out last week with a dominant 89-73 victory at Northern Arizona, improving to 6-2 in the process. The Lancers will explore California this week for a pair of non-conference match-ups against UC San Diego and Santa Clara.
Redshirt sophomore Caitlyn Harper led CBU in both games, averaging 19.5 points and 8.5 rebounds against San Diego State and NAU. Ane Olaeta (15.5 points per game), Brittany Klaman (11.5) and Britney Thomas (11) also stuffed the scoring column alongside Harper. Senior Georgia Dale became a member of the 1,000 point club when she hit the opening three-point bucket against the Aztecs, going on to average seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds during the two-game stint.
Olaeta remains the clear national leader in assists per game with 8.9 dimes per contest, while the team as a whole is tied for the top spot in the country in that category sharing the honor with DePaul at 20.6. The squad also tops the list for defensive rebounds per game at 33.9.

The Tritons are in their second season of their own Division I transition and have racked up a 9-14 record between the 2020-21 adjusted schedule and this young season. UCSD most recently defeated San Jose State at RIMAC Arena in convincing fashion, 81-61.
The Tritons were firing on all cylinders, shooting well and posting 45.8% (27-59) and 43.5% (10-23) from the field and three-point land, respectively. They also held the Spartans to just 18.8% (6-32) from beyond the arc.
Senior guard Madison Baxter scored a career high 19 points and four Tritons scored in double figures in an 81-61 victory over San Jose State. The 20-point win marked the Tritons' largest margin of victory over a Division I opponent to date and the 81 points scored were the most scored against a Division I opponent since the Tritons began their transition to Division I last season.

The Broncos' most recent contest was an 80-65 loss at Kansas on Sunday. Santa Clara led 35-32 at halftime behind a big second quarter effort, but KU benefited from an advantage in the paint, outscoring the Santa Clara 44-24 in the key.
A junior and two seniors lead the Broncos in scoring, as Lindsey VanAllen (13.0), Merle Wiehl (11.6) and Ashlyn Herlihy (11.5) are all good for double-digit outputs in any game. The trio also combines for the top-three rebounding spots on the squad, coming together for 15.6 boards per game as a unit.
Santa Clara starts the week with a 5-2 record, but will travel to Missouri to take on former WAC member Kansas City on Tuesday, Dec. 14, prior to its game against the Lancers.
