CBU Takes Season Series from Tarleton State with All-Around Victory

STEPHENVILLE – Big contributions from all over the floor led California Baptist University to a season sweep of Tarleton State, as the Lancers won round two between the two sides in four sets (25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20) on Tuesday.
The Lancers served tough all night, with an 8-3 advantage in aces. They also posted a 62.7 sideout percentage and held the Texans to a .149 hitting percentage. CBU starts the season on a three-match winning streak and 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Tarleton State drops to 1-5, 0-4 in the conference.
Cali Hoye recorded the first double-double of the season for CBU, with 20 kills, 12 digs and two aces. Tesa Oaks helped balance out the offense with 17 kills, five digs and two aces. Both Hoye (.341) and Oaks (.357) hit over .340 percent in the process.
Sophomore libero Paige Johnstone had the best match of her young career, with 24 digs, four assists and an ace to her credit.
Both setters, Leah Pease and Hana Okuhara, were not far off double-doubles of their own. Okuhara finished with 24 assists and eight digs, while Pease added 21 assists and nine digs.
Okuhara and Pease spread out the offense to where four Lancers finished with at least seven kills, as Christine Graf and Sydney Marks added seven kills each.

Oaks and some tough serving fueled CBU to a comfortable 25-16 victory in set one. Oaks had five kills in that first set, while the Lancers had three aces. Defensively, CBU held Tarleton State to a .032 hitting percentage in the opener, as well.
The Lancers kept the momentum going and jumped out to a 12-5 lead in set two, and then withstood a rally from the Texans. TSU managed to battle back and tie the set at 18-18, but CBU went on a 4-0 run from there, thanks to a kill and an ace from Hoye and a kill from Chandler Gorman, to go back up 22-18 en route to the 25-21 win.
Hoye went off for 10 kills in set three, but Tarleton State still managed to grind out a 25-23 win to force an extra game.
CBU rebounded in set four and jumped out to a 21-14 lead. TSU fought back within three points, 23-20, but a kill from Oaks gave the Lancers match point and it came on a Texans' 24th attack error of the night.
