Lancers Win Home WAC Opener in Five Sets Over Wolverines

RIVERSIDE – Undefeated conference records were on the line when California Baptist University volleyball hosted Utah Valley for its home Western Athletic Conference opener.
It fittingly went five sets on Monday night in the Van Dyne Gym. CBU got four of its eight blocks in the final set and capitalized on the Wolverine's errors to pull out the 25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-11 victory. The Lancers improve to 4-0 and 3-0 in the WAC, while UVU drops to 2-2, 2-1.
Four CBU double-doubles from Calissa Hoye, Leah Pease, Tesa Oaks and Hana Okuhara were key in the victory. For the second match in a row, Hoye had a 20-kill double-double on 20 kills, 10 digs, two blocks and an ace. Pease finished with 27 assists and 11 digs, while Okuhara had 23 assists and 12 digs. Oaks added 11 kills, 10 digs and two aces.
Two defining characteristics of the Lancers so far this season, offensive balance and spectacular libero play, were on display again Monday. Four players finished with at least nine kills. Sophomore libero Paige Johnstone eclipsed 20 digs for the second match in a row and added six assists and two aces to her line.
Christine Graf added 11 kills on a team-high .333 percentage (11-2-27) and two blocks. Sydney Marks wound up with nine kills and two blocks.

Utah Valley put the pressure on when it jumped out to a 4-2 lead in set five.
That's when CBU's block came alive, though, with a solo stuff from Graf tying things at 5-5. It sparked a 4-0 run that included a combo block from Hoye and Ellie Voss, and a kill from both players to make it 8-5 Lancers.
CBU stretched its lead to five, 11-6, after a kill from Marks and another Voss block – this time with Marks. Voss' hot fifth set led to her finishing with six kills, six blocks and three digs.
Utah Valley made things interesting again when it cut its deficit down to 12-10, but four unforced Wolverine errors secured the win for the Lancers.
WAC STANDINGS
All four undefeated teams played Monday night. NM State and Grand Canyon kept their undefeated records intact with sweeps of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (25-20, 25-21, 25-15) and Dixie State (25-21, 25-11, 25-22), respectively.
NMSU and GCU both improve to 3-0 overall and in conference to share first place in the WAC standings with CBU.

The Lancers and Wolverines will face off again on Tuesday at noon. The match will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network, with live stats from StatBroadcast. CBU will then prepare for a road series at Dixie State on Feb. 15-16 at 5 p.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
