Despite Several Standout Performances, CBU Suffers First Loss of the Season to UVU

RIVERSIDE – Balance on offense and strong libero play continued for California Baptist University volleyball in its series finale with Utah Valley Tuesday afternoon.
Less than 17 hours after the Lancers' five-set win over the Wolverines, UVU pulled out a four-set victory (15-25, 25-21, 25-16, 27-25) to close out the Western Athletic Conference series in the Van Dyne Gym. CBU moves to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the WAC after suffering its first loss of the year, while Utah Valley improves to 3-2 and 3-1.
Several Lancers put together big performances on Tuesday. Calissa Hoye secured her third-straight double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Christine Graf posted a team-high 12 kills on a .290 hitting percentage (12-3-31) and also had two blocks.
Ellie Voss hit .692 in the match with nine kills and no errors on 13 attempts. She also had two aces, two blocks and two digs.
Leah Pease nearly secured her second double-double in a row with 25 assists, eight digs and three aces. Hana Okuhara finished with 19 assists and three digs. Paige Johnstone finished with 14 digs, while Chandler Gorman also had four kills and four blocks.
STARS ON THE RISE
Hoye and Johnstone continue to spearhead the Lancers' offense and defense. Hoye has now reached double-digit kills in all five matches season, with two 20-kill performances.
Hoye now has 80 kills – 28 more than the next Lancer – for a 4.21 per set average for the season. The University of Iowa transfer is doing it all on a .304 hitting percentage.
Johnstone's 89 digs this year are 54 more than the next teammate. She is averaging 4.45 digs a set, and has now recorded 14 digs in all five matches this season.
WAC STANDINGS
The Lancers and Wolverines will remain neck-and-neck in the league standings, as they're both now tied for third place in the conference at 3-1. NM State and Grand Canyon both swept their matches Tuesday to keep in first place in the WAC at 4-0 overall and in conference.
Dixie State trails CBU and UVU in the WAC, currently in sixth place with a 2-4 league record. The Lancers are headed to Dixie State to renew a rivalry with their former PacWest Conference on Feb. 15-16, with start times set for 5 p.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
