PHOENIX --- California Baptist University showed some true grit and resilience on Thursday night, as the Lancers battled the Lopes of Grand Canyon to a 2-2 double-overtime draw.
The Lancers are now 10-2-3 on the season and 8-2-2 in the Western Athletic Conference with the draw. The conference record puts them tied for first with Seattle U, as the two teams both have 26 points on the year. Grand Canyon now stands at 5-8-1 on the year and 5-4-1 in the WAC.
It was a back-and-forth match for all 110 minutes, as both teams fought hard to put quality shots on frame.
It wasn't until the 42nd minute when the Lopes were the first to strike, securing the game's first goal, to take a 1-0 lead at the half. Both the Lancers and the Lopes recorded nine shots apiece in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Lancers went on the attack and earned a corner kick after a Lopes' defender deflected a shot. Jayden Ramirez played a ball back to Danielle Gordon, who played a ball into the box. Amy Aquino came flying in and rose above the Lopes' defense to place a perfect header on the ball and score the equalizer.

The Lopes would respond 12 minutes later, though, as Jaycee Iranshad found the back of the net to put the Lopes back on top.
CBU continued to show no quit as the Lancers again went on the attack firing shot after shot into the box. After the Lopes' defense deflected a shot, Ari Coronado had a look at the net from well beyond the box. Coronado placed a perfect strike to the right side of the net that bounced off the post and into the net for the second tie of the game.

The game would come to a 2-2 draw in regulation and be forced into overtime. Both teams were unsuccessful in the final two frames of OT, as the game ended in a well-fought 2-2 draw.
Aquino paced the Lancers on the night with four shots and three on goal. Romy Salvador played all 110 minutes between the sticks and recorded a season-high eight saves.
"We knew GCU would be a tough team to play at its place, and we'd need to match their energy," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "Unfortunately, we didn't do that in the first half, and it showed. We were uncharacteristically sloppy in execution, making our jobs harder than they needed to be. The second half was a different story. I'm proud of our teams' resilience and grit to dig in and work our way back into the game. Amy Aquino scored a terrific header on the corner kick to get us on the board, and Ari Coronado hit another SportsCenter type highlight goal. They are two seasoned upperclassmen that time and time again, have risen to the occasion for their team when needed this season. Romy was equally as good in goal, making key saves to keep us in the game as we worked our way back. In the second half and overtime, we controlled much of the game; unfortunately, we just ran out of time. As a young team, this was a valuable learning experience. We can't expect to earn the points we want if we only perform for 45minutes. Nevertheless, taking a point from this game was very important. We'll learn from this game, get better and turn our focus to preparing for Saturday's game."
