RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University Athletics updated its department record for grade-point average with a 3.461 in the 2020-21 academic year. It marks the seventh time in the last eight years and third year in a row the Lancers have set a new GPA record.
The Lancers posted GPAs of 3.45 or better in both the fall (3.454) and spring (3.468) semesters – both of which are not far off the department's semester record of 3.475, which was set in the spring of 2020. Eighteen of 19 CBU teams logged GPAs of 3.24 or better this year and seven maintained GPAs above 3.5.
It continues an incredible run of academic success for CBU, as it set a new record GPA of 3.355 in 2018-19 and upped that again to 3.445 in 2019-20.
"I am very proud to see our student-athletes compete with excellence for another strong academic year, especially during the COVID pandemic," said Rachel Keys, the Assistant Athletic Director of Academic and Student Support and the Senior Woman Administrator. "We have seen a lot of changes over the past year, but one thing that has remained true is our student-athletes commitment and outstanding performance with their academics."
Women's cross country/track posted the top GPA in the department for the second year in a row with a 3.702, while women's swimming/diving was second with a 3.671 and women's soccer rounded out the top three with a 3.654.
The men's teams were also led by cross country/track for the second year in a row with a 3.504. Men's water polo was in second with a 3.496 while men's soccer's 3.466 was a close third.
