RIVERSIDE – CJ Culpepper's dominant year continued, as the California Baptist University closer was named a 2021 Cape Cod League East Division All-Star on Tuesday.
Culpepper becomes the second Lancer in the last five years to be named an all-star in the elite Cape Cod League (CCL). Former CBU pitcher Justin Montgomery was first named a CCL All-Star in 2017. There will not be an All-Star Game in the CCL this season, but it adds an impressive list of accolades for Culpepper already this year.
Like he did for CBU this season, Culpepper leads the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox with three saves, which also rank second in the entire CCL this summer. He's allowed just one hit, one walk and struck out 10 over 6.2 innings.
After a standout season with the Lancers this year, Culpepper was named the 2021 Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and all-conference first-teamer. He was then crowned an NCAA Division I Freshman All-American by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). He was then voted an All-American Third Team Award by the NCBWA. It made him the first Lancer to be named to a D-I All-America Team that was not limited solely to freshmen.
It was a historic season for Culpepper in Riverside. He logged a single-season record 13 saves for CBU, which not only led the WAC but ranked second in all of Division I in the regular season.
Overall, Culpepper made 22 appearances, which ranks second on the team and struck out 38 batters over 30 innings. He also won two games and maintained a 3.30 earned-run average, 1.33 WHIP and .225 batting average against.
It helped CBU complete one of the best-ever transition seasons to Division I. The Lancers won a share of the 2021 WAC title for the second time in as many opportunities and went 40-16 overall.
