VB Preview: Lancers Set To Make Home Opener With Three Matches in CBU/UCR Tournament
9/8/2021 10:00:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University volleyball will make its long-awaited home debut this weekend, as it co-hosts the CBU/UC Riverside Tournament in the Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers are set to play three matches against New Orleans and Southern Utah before ending the weekend with the Crosstown Showdown versus UC Riverside. CBU has won two of its last three matches to bring its record 2-3 on the season after it split a pair of matches last week at the South Dakota State Tournament.
Offensive efficiency has been key to both of the Lancers' wins so far this season, as they hit a combined .322 in both of their victories so far – sweeps of Chattanooga and Montana. It's been a three-headed attack for CBU so far, with Scherine Dahoue (45 kills, 3.00 a set), Christine Graf (39, 2.79, .274 percent), and Tesa Oaks (39, 2.60). For the second year in a row, Hana Okuhara (79 assists, 5.27) and Leah Pease (76, 5.07) have split time just about evenly at setter.
Paige Johnstone has continued to anchor the defense in her second year at libero, with 60 digs overall for a 4.00 per set average. Chandler Gorman has spearheaded CBU's defense at the net, as she's averaging a block a set with 11 overall.
Freshman Ashlyn Nevrla has perhaps been the biggest surprise so far, as she's played her into the second starting middle blocker position, with 20 kills (1.43) on a .390 percentage and five blocks over the last four matches.
A LOOK AT THE OPPOSITION
It's been a tough start to the year for New Orleans, as the Privateers have played just two matches after their last five matches have been canceled due to Hurricane Ida. They're 0-2 overall with four-set losses to Tennessee State and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
Southern Utah comes in with a 2-4 record, with five-set wins over Long Island University and George Mason. The Thunderbirds have played a tough schedule, with losses to 15th-ranked BYU, UNLV, Boise State and UC Irvine.
UC Riverside has gotten out to a 1-3 start after opening the year with a four-set win over Fordham. The Highlanders have since faced New Mexico, Loyola Marymount and Fresno State but did take the Bulldogs to five sets in Fresno last Saturday.
