PHOENIX – California Baptist University volleyball took on Grand Canyon Saturday afternoon in the desert, despite a solid effort, the Lopes prevailed 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-11) to take the day.
Cassidy Dennison led the attack for CBU with nine kills. Leah Pease posted a double-double, digging out 14 balls while also setting up 22 assists. Paige Johnstone was not far behind with 13 digs.
The Lancers kept pace with the Lopes for the first half of the opening set before the Lopes pulled away to take the opener. Set two was the most hotly contested set, with the Lancers refusing to roll over for the home team, scoring four straight points after trailing 18-24 before the Lopes closed the door. The final set was all GCU who sprinted out to a significant lead from which the Lancers could not recover.
CBU falls to 6-8 on the year with a 1-2 record in the Western Athletic Conference while GCU improves to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the WAC.
The Lancers will stay on the road next week, taking on a new WAC member in UT Arlington for the first time in program history on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. Pacific.
