BAKERSFIELD – The California Baptist University men's and women's swim teams traveled north to begin their new season, participating in the CSU Bakersfield Sprint Classic on Friday. The sprint holds true to its name, with no individual race longer than a 500-yard freestyle nor a relay longer than 800-yards.
The Lancer men earned a second-place finish as a team with 302 points as they began the season. Finishing first was UC Santa Barbara with 506 points, with Cal Poly (266.5) and CSUB (263.5) rounding out all participants.
The women faced a slightly deeper field, finishing fifth out of six teams, posting a team score of 163.5. The Gauchos also took the win on the women's side, making it a clean sweep for UCSB on Friday, posting a score of 455.5. UC Davis (272), San Jose State (269.5), and the host Roadrunners (192.5) all finished ahead of CBU, with Cal Poly bringing up the rear with 147 points.
The men got the most points help from a trio of strong relay groups and multiple strong individual performances. Remi Fabiani came up big for the Lancer men, helping with three relay scores and winning his individual 50-yard freestyle race. Brendan Man, Jonathan Reiter, Simeon Rickenberger, Mark Kovacsics, and Robert Moseley secured top-five finishes on the day.
Mia Maspers earned the women's first top finish of the season, winning her 50 free race, and Faith Brazil posted a runner-up finish in the 50 breaststroke. Both also contributed to a top-four relay finish on Friday.
The teams will return to CSUB's John S. Hillman Memorial Aquatic Center on Saturday for the Roadrunner invite. First start is set for 10 a.m. in Bakersfield.
