AMES — California Baptist University wrestling squared off against the Iowa State Cyclones in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday night, eventually falling 39-9 in their first-ever BIG 12 conference matchup. The Cyclones entered the match ranked #9 in the NWCA poll heading into the match and featured the BIG 12 Wrestler of the Week in freshman Paniro Johnson.
CBU started slow but finished the night with a bang securing two victories in the 125 and 133 weight classes.
Freshman Elijah Griffin took down the No. 6 wrestler in the country, Kysen Terukina, with a 4-2 decision to put the Lancers on the board.
Sophomore Hunter Leake pulled off the most impressive victory of the night with a fall against #12 ranked Zach Redding after battling him through three rounds.
Peter Acciardi had a tall task for his first matchup of the season facing off against fifth ranked Marcus Coleman, but was able to hold him off through three rounds before losing in a major decision 10-4. Meanwhile, Chaz Hallmark had an equally challenging assignment facing the BIG 12 Wrestler of the Week in Paniro Johnson. Hallmark was able to hold his own throughout the fight and forced it into a major decision victory for Johnson. Overall, the Lancers faced eight top-15 wrestlers on the evening.
