RIVERSIDE – The second meeting between the California Baptist University Lancers and the Santa Clara Broncos went much like the first one last year. The Broncos were up early and at halftime, but CBU adjusted at the break and cruised to a second-half victory by a score of 83-72. CBU improves to 2-2 on the season, while Santa Clara slides to 2-3.
The visitors raced out to a 25-17 lead by the end of the first half, using 50% shooting from the field and three-point land to do so. The Lancer defense would clamp down in the second quarter, holding the Broncos to just 13 points on four made field goals and four free throws.
After the break, Kinsley Barrington took it upon herself to pick up her teammates straight away, scoring the first seven Lancer points of the second half, giving CBU its first lead, 41-40, since 8:25 in the first quarter. Trinity San Antonio picked it from there, scoring eight of her game-high 23 points the close out the frame.
The teams played fairly even basketball in the fourth, getting into a free throw shooting contest as 10 of the final 14 combined points came from the charity stripe. CBU found success in the Broncos' shortcomings, scoring 17 points off 16 Santa Clara turnovers.
Brittany Klaman nearly had a double-double, scoring 11 points while dishing out nine assists. Tiena Neale was the final Lance to crack double digits with 10 points and four rebounds.
The Lancers are off until after Thanksgiving, when they will take part in the Dana on Mission Bay Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by USD. Their first opponent will be one of the most formidable opponents since arriving on the DI scene as they are slotted to go toe-to-toe with the 2020-21 NCAA Runner-Up Arizona Wildcats. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in La Jolla. Please visit the USD women's basketball website for more game and ticket information.
