RIVERSIDE – The 2022-23 California Baptist University women's basketball season got off to a wild ride on Monday afternoon in Riverside, taking down UC San Diego in the season opener by a score of 84-76. With the victory, CBU has now won four straight season openers.
Trinity San Antonio could not have opened the season on a higher note, setting a new career record with 31 points, the most for any Lancer against a DI opponent since Britney Thomas scored 39 against Seattle U in February of 2019. She finished the game with a double-double, adding ten rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

The Lancers led by two after a back-and-fourth first quarter but trailed 41-33 at the half after the Tritons got hot from the field and shot 11-17. Trinity San Antonio led the Lancers with 10 points at the break, but UCSD's eight first-half three-pointers built their comfortable lead.
CBU used the break to regroup and came back to outscore the Tritons 24-14 and take a two-point edge heading into the fourth. San Antonio doubled her scoring in that quarter, reaching 20-plus points for the third time in her CBU career.
Trinity set her new career-high in the fourth quarter after opening the frame with a three-pointer and nailing all three free throws after getting fouled beyond the arc, making the score 67-59 in favor of the Lancers.
San Antonio led all scorers with her effort. Lesila Finau, fresh off representing Tonga in the FIBA Women's Polynesian World Cup, was the only other Lancer to crack double-digits with 15 in her CBU debut. Kinsley Barrington was shy of a double-double with nine points and ten rebounds

The Lancers also set a Division I program mark, going 28-33 free throws, the most in a single game since CBU joined the Division I ranks in 2018-19.
CBU will play host again during opening week, welcoming Saint Mary's to Riverside on November 12 at 3 p.m. This will be the first-ever meeting between these two teams.
