SAN DIEGO--- The Lancers traveled to San Diego to face the Toreros for their first matchup with one another in program history. The matchup also is the first and only against the West Coast Conference this season.
California Baptist battled hard for 4o minutes and pulled out a close game 76-73 on 48% shooting from the field and eight made threes. The Lancers were led in scoring by Joe Quintana, who had a season-high 17 points and five assists. Quintana played five seasons in the WCC for Loyola Marymount and put together one of his best performances against a familiar San Diego team.
In the first half, the toreros got off to a hot start building up an 11-point lead. The Lancers slowly but surely climbed back into the game and cut the lead to two by halftime. Quintana and Hunter Goodrick led the first half, scoring eight apiece, including back-to-back triples by Quintana to force a Torero timeout with 1:45 to go.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with the Lancers going on a 10-0 run midway through to take the lead. CBU followed up with a 9-0 run to take a nine-point lead with under four minutes to play. Riley Battin hit a clutch triple with 2:12 to play to extend the lead back to nine and capture late-game momentum for the Lancers, who would carry that to victory on the road.
The Lancers had four players in double figures, including Taran Armstrong (11), Riley Battin (11), Joe Quintana (16), and Hunter Goodrick (13). The CBU bench shined again, outscoring San Diego 29-9 and pulling in 21 rebounds. The win marks the second road of the season for CBU, with the other coming against Washington.
The Lancers will have a week off before facing the Sonoma State Seawolves in the CBU Events Center on Sunday, December 18th, at 7 p.m.
