Lancers In The Hunt After Day One of the UNLV Invite

LAS VEGAS – California Baptist University men's and women's swim teams opened up the three-day UNLV Invite on Saturday. The men closed out day one in third place with 220.50 points behind host and reigning WAC Champions UNLV (320 points) and Cal Poly (221). Fresno Pacific (94), Linfield (54.50), Lewis & Clark College (40) and an unattached group (29) rounded out the men's field.
The women are currently fifth with 92 total points but face a deeper field that runs ten teams deep. It includes the likes of the day one leaders UCLA (341), host UNLV (221), WAC foes Northern Arizona (185) and NM State (142). Cal Poly and New Mexico (42) are next behind the Lancer women with Fresno Pacific (10), Linfield (eight) and Lewis & Clark (two) rounding out the standings.
The men were paced in scoring by a trio of victories. Remi Fabiani won his 50-meter free final in a time of 19.24. Mark Kovacsics torched the field in his 500 free victory, putting nearly five seconds between himself and the second place finisher with his time of 4:24.72.
Robert Moseley found his way to the podium on Saturday, earning third place in the 200 IM. Finally, the men's 400 medley squad bested UNLV by half a second, touching the wall in a time of 3:14.96.
Mia Maspers swam a new personal best in the 50 free, securing the second-fastest time in program history in her fifth place finish in 23.24 seconds. The women's 200 free relay and 400 medley relay teams each took fifth place in their respective races.
Competition will continue tomorrow as fans will witness 10 more events beginning with prelims at 9:30 am.
