SB PREVIEW: CBU Preps for Crosstown Showdown and Campbell Cartier Classic
2/14/2022 12:51:00 PM | Softball
RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball took on a gauntlet in the opening weekend schedule in Tempe, and will play their first games in California in the upcoming second week of the season.
Opening weekend for the Lancers was highlighted by an 8-2 win over Missouri State for their first victory of the season and a battle with #2/#5 Oklahoma State in a 3-1 loss.
Major contributions came from familiar faces, such as Katelyn Mangrello and Makayla Jordan on offense. Mangrello starts the season with a .500 batting average (7-for-14), while Jordan currently leads the team with five runs batted in. Some new names also came up big last weekend, with freshman shortstop Priscilla Estrada recording at least one hit in her first four games as a Lancer and transfer pitcher Jazmine Castaneda earning the complete-game win against MSU.
GAME INFORMATION
Opponent: UC Riverside
Date/Time: Wednesday, Feb. 16 @ 2 p.m.
Location: Riverside, California (UCR Campus)
Venue: Amy S. Harrison Stadium
Live Stats: SideArm Stats
The lone softball contest of the Crosstown Showdown this season will take place at Amy S. Harrison Stadium on the campus of UC Riverside. Historically, the Highlanders have a 41-14-2 record in the series since 1987, but the Lancers have won two of the last three contests -- all at Harrison Stadium.
UCR has been a little streaky in the first few games of 2022, owning a 2-2 record but losing by a combined score of 14-1 and winning by 15-7. The Highlanders have played one Western Athletic Conference opponent already this season, defeating Utah Valley 7-4 to earn their first win of the year.
CAMPBELL/CARTIER CLASSIC INFORMATION
Opponents: Southern Utah, CSUN, Army, San Diego State
Dates: Feb. 18-20
Times: 2/18 – 12:30 p.m. | 2/19 – 9 a.m. & 11:30 a.m. | 2/20 – 12:30 p.m.
Location: San Diego
Venue: SDSU Softball Stadium
Video (SDSU game only): Mountain West Network
Live Stats: TBD
Southern Utah might be the early season example of "don't judge a book by its cover." The Thunderbirds are 0-5 with every loss coming in run-rule fashion, but they have played ranked opponents in Arizona (twice) and Alabama, another Pac-12 opponent in Oregon State and a reloaded New Mexico team. CBU will look to keep its perfect 3-0 record against SUU going into the opening game of the tournament.
CSUN has also faced and fallen to nationally-ranked opponents in UCLA and Oregon, but picked up a pair of wins in the following doubleheader where it hosted Nevada, winning tight ones on scores of 2-1 and 3-2 (8 innings). With such high quality opponents, the Matadors' stats are hard to judge, having recorded just 12 hits in 32 innings played.
Army will open its season at the Campbell/Cartier Classic, playing CSUN and SDSU before taking on the Lancers on Saturday. The Black Knights finished 2021 a hair under .500 with a 16-17 record, but went 12-10 during Patriot League play. Army returns its top-hitter from last season, Angelina Bebek, who finished the season with a .351 batting average and team highs in runs scored (23) and extra-base hits (13).
The host Aztecs come into the weekend with a 4-1 record, with the lone defeat coming from Stanford, 1-0. SDSU has some impressive numbers through five games, already touting six home runs, 26 runs scored and a .316 team batting average. San Diego State has been solid in the circle as well, owning a 1.03 staff ERA and an 11-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 34 innings pitched.
