RIVERSIDE - California Baptist women's basketball secured back-to-back 20 win seasons today after a lopsided 84-59 victory over Utah Valley. With the current record of 20-7 (11-5 WAC), the Lancers are guaranteed at least the three-seed in the upcoming Western Athletic Conference.
When these two teams met earlier this season, Caitlyn Harper dropped a career-high 30 points on the Wolverines, and today she continued to pour it on with a team-high 29. Harper remains atop the conference scoring leaderboard, with UVU center Josie Williams a few points behind her in second.
Trinity San Antonio brought the energy today, recording her first career double-double by scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. San Antonio also notched a career-high six steals, just one shy of matching the Division I single-game record.
Nicole Avila-Ambrosi scored an even dozen for CBU in her second start of the year. Georgia Dale did all of her offensive damage in the first half, scoring 11 points after hitting a trio of timely three-pointers to help the Lancers lead by 19 at the break.
The game was fairly close in the first half as the Lancers led by four points after 10 minutes. Utah Valley's issues came in the second quarter when they were held scoreless for the opening six minutes of action while CBU poured in 14 to make it 35-17 in favor of the Lancers. The Wolverines were held to just five points on 2-12 shooting in the second quarter.
The second half was all about maintaining for CBU as the lead never dropped below 17 in the third and 21 in the fourth. The Lancers hit 90.9% (10-11) of their free throws on Saturday, their best effort at the charity stripe all season long.
