AIR FORCE ACADEMY – The California Baptist University dive teams opened a three day event at the United States Air Force Academy located just outside of Colorado Springs, competing against some of the top competition in the nation. The meet will pit Lancer divers against those from programs such as Texas A&M, Utah, Denver, BYU, Colorado State, Air Force and WAC foes Wyoming.
The men started the day on the 1-meter board, with divers posting massive scores near the 400-point mark that would certainly challenge the best in the NCAA Championships. Evan Honer comfortably qualified for the finals with a 5th place preliminary score of 334.80, before upping that to 337.70 in the finals to claim fourth place overall. Honer was less than three points behind Tony Chen from Utah who finished 22nd in the NCAA Championships in the same event in 2021.
The women's side also had an extremely talented field while also being nearly twice as big as the men's competition with 41 athletes vying for 16 spots. Senior Kiree Lowe was just two points shy of moving on to the next round after posting a preliminary score of 241.45.
Freshman Paula De Moya Alvarez was able to claim one of those coveted spots, earning 16th place in the prelims with a score of 243.55 to qualify for the consolation finals later in the day. After navigating a top-16 list full of NCAA qualifiers, De Moya finished the event with a 7th place finish in the consolation bracket, posting a score of 237.90.
Outside of the official competition is a growing movement in the form of team diving events. Thursday challenged all of the men's teams, with the exception of Texas A&M, against each other in a competition that is gaining traction as a potential official event in the NCAA. Each team selects three divers to performs two dives in the 1-meter, the 3-meter, and the platform events encompassing all six variations of scored dives. In this new format, the Lancer men took second place behind Utah, besting the likes of Denver, BYU, Air Force, and Wyoming in order.
