CBU Dominates Overtime for Road Win at Chicago State

CHICAGO – A dominant overtime period pushed California Baptist University women's basketball to a road win at Chicago State in Western Athletic Conference action to kick off the final week of the regular season on Wednesday.
The Lancers secured the 76-69 victory after outscoring the Cougars 12-5 in the extra session, including a game-ending 8-0 run. CBU improves to 21-7 overall and 12-5 in the WAC. Chicago State falls to 4-22 and 3-14. It keeps California Baptist in the hunt for a top-two seed for the upcoming WAC Tournament, as Grand Canyon currently holds an edge there with a 19-8, 12-4 record going into its Thursday game at Utah Valley.
Caitlyn Harper was a force in all aspects on Wednesday, as she finished with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to go with eight blocks and two steals. It set CBU's single-game record for blocks in the NCAA Division I era.
Ane Olaeta nearly had a double-double of her own, with a team-high 19 points, eight assists and two steals. Brittany Klaman joined them both in double-digit scoring with 15 points highlighted by a trio of three-pointers. Nicole Avila-Ambrosi was active with eight points, four boards and three steals.

CBU came out on fire and held a 24-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lancers shot 50 percent (10-20) and held CSU to 18.8 percent from the field (18.8) in the opening frame. Olaeta and Harper set the tone with eight and seven points, respectively in the opening 10 minutes.
Chicago State made things interesting and cut its deficit down to four, 34-30, at halftime and then took the lead in the fourth quarter. The Cougars led by as many as six, 57-51, with six minutes left in regulation, but CBU responded with an 11-3 run sparked by four points from Avila-Ambrosi and Olaeta. It gave CBU a 62-60 lead with 1:20 to go.
It was back and forth down the stretch. The Cougars tied the game with 49 seconds left and then an Olaeta layup made it 64-62 Lancers with 38 seconds remaining. CSU then tied it back up six seconds later. Both teams missed a shot at the win over the final 30 seconds to force overtime.
The Lancers and Cougars traded buckets on the first few possessions, but CBU scored the final eight points, half coming from Harper. Klaman, Sydney Palma and Harper all hit two free throws in the final seconds to lock up the win.
