Lancers Sweep Doubleheader, Continue Winning Streak in Crosstown Showdown Versus UCR

The Lancers capped the day off with a sweep in the Crosstown Showdown with straight-set scores of 25-23, 25-23, 25-19. CBU has now won the last four matches against UCR, with consecutive sweeps, since the series picked back up after a 21-year hiatus in 2018.

Earlier Saturday, California Baptist used five sets to defeat Air Force (21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 15-11) to improve to 4-5 on the season. It handed the Falcons just their second loss of the season (7-2) after they came into the week undefeated and as one of the best blocking teams with their 74 blocks and 2.85 a set average, ranking second and 16th in the country. UC Riverside drops to 2-7 in 2022.

CBU's defense was locked in against the Highlanders, as they used eight blocks and 49 digs to hold UCR to a .148 hitting percentage (36-19-115). The Lancers were able to take UC Riverside out of system with six aces.

Paige Johnstone finished the match with 17 digs, seven assists and two aces. Leah Pease nearly had a double-double with 18 assists, nine digs and two aces, while Reese Reed added 11 assists and seven digs.
Christine Graf (12) and Mia Jerue (10) both eclipsed double-digit kills against UC Riverside, while Graf also had four blocks and Jerue added eight digs. Ashlyn Nevrla and Chandler Gorman also had four blocks each.

California Baptist's match with Air Force made for the Lancers' second-straight five-setter. The Lancers came out victorious with the help of 14 blocks, identical double-doubles of 23 assists and 11 digs from setters Pease and Reed and several other impressive performances.
Graf and Anna Jackson both hit double-digit kills efficiently. Graf had a match-high 16 kills on a .375 hitting percentage (16-4-32) while Jackson had 12 kills at a .478 clip (12-1-23).
Defensively, Johnstone tallied a match-high 16 digs and Gorman had eight blocks. Cassidy Dennison (nine), Jerue (eight) and Nevrla (seven) all notched at least seven kills, as well. Dennison added six blocks and five digs and Nevrla had five blocks.
Set five was tied 6-6 but a 3-0 run highlighted by an ace from Jerue and combo block from Nevrla and Jackson gave CBU momentum and a 9-6 lead. Air Force fought back within a point, 9-8, but another 3-0 run gave the Lancers a big 12-8 lead. Jackson forced sideout with a kill and Gorman had a hand in the next two points with a kill and block assist.

UP NEXT
The Lancers will hit the road again for two neutral-site matches at the Grand Canyon Tournament. CBU will face two Big West Conference opponents in Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Sept. 16 and then UC Irvine on Saturday, Sept. 17. Both matches are set for a 3:30 p.m. first serve.
