CBU Men's Basketball Finishes Texas Road Trip in Edinburg

EDINBURG--- The California Baptist University Lancers finished the second leg of their Texas road trip with a conference matchup with the UTRGV Vaqueros. The Lancers and Vaqueros faced off for the seventh time, with CBU holding a 4-2 record that included its first-ever Western Athletic Conference tournament win last season. The Vaqueros defended their home court with a 64-58 win over CBU.
The Vaqueros picked up their tenth home win and second conference win. The Lancer's three-game winning streak was halted as they will fall to 5-4 in WAC play.
The first half was a back-and-forth, high-scoring affair as both teams took turns going on scoring runs. CBU took care of the basketball, committing two turnovers through the initial 20 minutes. Taran Armstrong continued his strong road trip with 12 points and four assists to lead the Lancers to a 34-34 tie at the break.
In the second half, the offense slowed down significantly for the Lancers as they shot 26% and scored 24 points. The Vaqueros opened up a seven-point lead with under nine minutes to play, which was their largest of the game. The Vaqueros controlled much of the second half and led by eleven with four minutes. UTRGV would go on to win the game 64-58.
Taran Armstrong finished the contest with 19 points, four rebounds, and five assists to lead CBU. Hunter Goodrick chipped in 17 points and seven rebounds.
Next for the Lancers will be a matchup with the red-hot Southern Utah Thunderbirds in the CBU Events Center on Wednesday, February 1st, at 7 pm.
