RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University cross-country team will head to Sacramento for the program's second trip to the DI West Regionals. The Lancers became eligible last season for postseason competition following a four-year transition period.
Last season, both teams placed fifth at the regionals in Seattle, Washington. The women earned a spot in Nationals, while the men barely missed out on qualifying. The women became the first CBU athletics program to participate in a National Championship and placed 29th of the 31 teams.
The Lancers have enjoyed a very successful 2023 season thus far, with both teams claiming their highest-ever rankings in the national polls. The men are currently fourth in the nation, while the women placed as high as 12th and are currently in 21st.
After dominating the field at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, the men collected their fourth straight conference championship. The men swept the podium and had the top four placers. Arturs Medveds was the Individual Champion, with Valentin Soca, Matias Reynaga, Giedrius Valincius, and Rikus Van Niekerk collecting All-WAC First Team nods. The men won the Mark Covert Classic and the Roy Griak Invitational while placing fifth at the Nuttycombe Invitational heading in their non-championship season.
The men have been on top of the West Regional rankings for the past four weeks and will face stiff competition in the form of a trio of PAC-12 schools: Oregon, Washington, and Stanford. Stanford is the reigning West Region Champions, finishing ahead of Gonzaga, Washington, and Oregon, all of whom figure to be in the mix this year.
On the women's side, the Lancers are coming off a second-place finish at the WAC Championships in Abilene. The women collected eight All-WAC placers, the most in program history, and had the Individual Champion in Greta Karinauskaite. Greta also was the WAC Athlete of the Year on the women's side and earned a USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week nod in 2023. Karinauskaite was the individual champion at the Roy Griak Invitational and helped the women take eighth at the Nuttycombe Invitational.
The women who entered the race ranked 21st nationally and fifth regionally. The Lancers trail Stanford, Washington, Oregon, and Oregon State in the West Region, with all four of those teams finishing ahead of the Lancers in last year's regional race. Stanford is the reigning champion in the West Region and currently is the favorite heading into the weekend.
The West Regionals will begin on Friday, November 10, at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento, California. The women's 6K race is slated for 10 AM, while the men's 10K will begin at 11 AM.
