PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO – Jazmine Castaneda had Maryland guessing all day long, leading California Baptist University softball to a 2-0 victory in Saturday's game. The Terrapins entered the game averaging eight and-a-half runs per game but were held to just one in the contest.
Castaneda earned her first win of the season, and 13th as a Lancer, by allowing just five hits to 23 batters faced, facing the minimum in five of her six complete innings pitched. Hosick came in to close out the game in the seventh, doing so successfully to earn her first career save.
CBU's bats were dialed in on Saturday to the tune of seven hits on the day. Newcomer Maya Martinez came up clutch with a pair of hits, one of which plated the two winning runs in a chaotic third inning. The Lancers' made Maryland pay for four errors in the bottom of the third, costly mistakes that directly led to CBU's victory.
Castaneda got the first out of the seventh, then allowed a double to right center, prompting Head Coach Mike Smith to call in freshman Presley Hosick for her first relief appearance. Hosick came into a game for the first time since throwing her historic no-hitter again Wisconsin on Thursday and continued that hitless streak, inducing two quick outs on eight pitches to complete the save.
Deja Westbrook recorded her first multi-hit game of the season, going 2-3 against the Terps, while also making a highlight defensive play in center field. After four games, Westbrook leads the team with a .375 batting average, a .444 on-base percentage, and slugging .500.
CBU will return to Riverside with a respectable 2-2 record, with both wins coming against Power 5 opponents. They will look to improve on that record when they host the Crosstown Showdown on Wednesday night. First pitch between the Highlands and Lancers is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
