Lancers Claim 2023 Crosstown Showdown with Power and Speed

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University softball kept their good momentum from Mexico going with a convincing 7-1 victory in the Crosstown Showdown. The Lancers improve to 3-2 on the young season with five more games ahead of them this week.

CBU was in control from the first pitch as starting pitcher Alyssa Argomaniz retired nine straight into the fourth inning. She would earn her first win of the season after tossing five innings with only one hit allowed, one earned run, and striking out five. Jazmine Castaneda wrapped things up for Argomaniz, throwing two innings of two-hit ball and three strikeouts.

Ashlee Annett kept the early season theme of big-time plays from the freshman class going as he smacked her first hit for a double to the wall to score Mackenzie San Pedro all the way from first. The Highlanders would tie the game in the top of the fourth with a solo shot, but it was all Lancers after that.

CBU responded immediately, putting up two runs in the bottom of the inning off Priscilla Estrada's first career triple, plating Samantha Demyon and Annett.

CBU would tack on some insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth as Deja Westbrook crushed a no-doubter over the left field wall to add two more to the scoreboard for the home team. The Lancers would get two more later in the inning on a ball in play from Demyon, whose speed forced a bad throw, allowing CBU to reach their seven-run final tally.

Up next for the Lancers is the first of three hosted tournaments in 2023, the CBU Classic. Colorado State, CSUN, and Pacific will come to Riverside for a three-day round-robin-style tournament before a consolation and championship game on Sunday will crown a tournament champion.
