2/15/2023 9:38:00 PM | Men's Basketball
RIVERSIDE--- In their penultimate home game, the California Baptist University Lancers earned a dominating win over the Seattle U Redhawks 84-63. The eleventh meeting between the two programs is a matchup that has produced numerous close games since CBU joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2018. Five of the matchups have been within one score, not including the Lancer's overtime loss in 2022. The win for CBU evened the season series at one game apiece as both teams held serve at home.
The Lancers have evened up their conference record at 7-7, and the Redhawks have dropped to 9-5 in WAC play, which is third in the standings behind Southern Utah and Utah Valley.
CBU jumped out of the gate on fire with a 22-2 run, including 20 unanswered. The defensive intensity was fully displayed as they held an outstanding three-point shooting team to 2-11 and 35% from the field overall. The Lancers had one of their best first-half displays from the arc, shooting 53% on seven makes. Tre Armstrong and Hunter Goodrick had six of the seven makes, and Armstrong led the team with 13 points.
The outset of the second half was back-and-forth as the Redhawks were able to pull the game within eleven. The Lancers retook control and went on a 16-5 run to end the Redhawk's comeback attempt and secure the win. Despite foul trouble by Goodrick and Reed Nottage, the Lancers got essential contributions from Scotty Washington and Juhlawnei Stone, who combined for 15 points on 6-9 shooting.
The Lancers had four players in double figures on the night, led by Hunter Goodrick and Tre Armstrong with 15 apiece. Riley Battin had 12 and reached his 1,000th career point on the night. The CBU bench continues to be a strong point, and they outscored the Redhawks 30-11 in that department.
Next, the Lancers will take another Texas road trip with Sam Houston State first up on Thursday, February 23rd, at 4:30 pm in Huntsville.
