LAS VEGAS--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team's quarterfinal matchup is now set against Utah Tech after the Trailblazers defeated the Utah Valley Wolverines 72-68 on Monday afternoon in the Michelob Ultra Arena.
CBU holds a 15-4 record in a matchup that dates back to the PacWest era for both programs. The Lancers have won 12 of the last 13, including a 75-71 comeback win in late February over the Trailblazers in Riverside. CBU trailed by double-digits in the fourth quarter before the Lancers mounted the comeback to win by four.
Trinity San Antonio recorded the first triple-double in program history with a 17pts/10reb/11ast line. Chloe Webb, Grace Schmidt, and Filipa Barros all came up big in that game, scoring in double-figures. Breaunna Gillen and Averi Papa led the Trailblazers, with both recording double-doubles.
The Lancers will play in their fifth WAC tournament game since becoming eligible for postseason competition in 2021. CBU won the tournament in 2021 after completing an undefeated regular season. The Lancers defeated New Mexico State and Grand Canyon en route to their 2021 championship. Meanwhile, the Trailblazers are playing in their first WAC tournament after transitioning from D-2.
San Antonio and Schmidt made the All-Wac teams with a first-team distinction for San Antonio and a second-team nod for Schmidt. Gillen, for Utah Tech, joined San Antonio on the first team for the Trailblazers.
The Lancers and Trailblazers will square off on Wednesday, March 8th at 2 p.m. at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas with coverage on ESPN+.
