CBU Set to Face Red Hot Bearcats in WAC Quarterfinals

3/8/2023 8:19:00 PM

LAS VEGAS--- California Baptist University will square off against the Sam Houston Bearcats in the Western Athletic Conference Quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. The Lancers and Bearcats have met three times before, with Sam Houston winning all those matchups. The most recent game between these two programs came in late February when the Bearcats defeated the Lancers 56-45 in Huntsville.

The Bearcats entered the WAC tournament as the #1 overall seed despite the Utah Valley Wolverines winning the regular season title. According to the WAC's scoring system, Sam Houston had the best resume and was therefore seeded #1. Sam Houston is entering on a seven-game winning streak, with their previous game being a 72-58 win over Abilene Christian in Huntsville.

CBU is coming off a victory over the Abilene Christian Wildcats in the opening round of the WAC tournament, led by Tre Armstrong's hot shooting night. Armstrong shot 5-6 from the perimeter, including two four-point plays off the bench.

A key matchup to watch will be WAC Player of the Year Qua Grant against 2nd team All-WAC selection Taran Armstrong for CBU. Grant is second in the conference in steals and eighth in scoring and leads, while Armstrong is first in assists in the league.

The Lancers and Bearcats will tip off at noon on Thursday, March 9th, at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
