RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team battled Tarleton Texans to five sets on Thursday evening in Riverside, with the road squad picking up the hard-fought victory. For the Texans, it was their first conference win of the season and moved their record to 1-6 while dropping the Lancers to the same record.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
CBU started the match off with momentum and energy, building a 6-1 lead to force an early Tarleton timeout in the opening set. That early momentum carried over to the rest of the frame, allowing the Lancers to close on a 5-1 run to defeat the Texans 25-20 for the 1-0 lead. Tarleton would flip the script in the second set, taking a commanding 20-14 lead in the period that would not be overcome. The Texans would even the match with a 25-21 result.
The momentum from the Texans in the second set spilled over into the third frame, with Tarleton opening up a 5-1 lead to begin the set. CBU would battle back and eventually take a brief lead at 11-10, but Tarleton would use a 6-3 run to steal back the advantage and force a Branden Higa timeout. The Texans would close the frame on a 7-1 run and take the 2-1 lead. Facing a four-set elimination, the Lancers showed plenty of grit, emphasized by a 10-2 mid-set run to give them a 15-10 lead over Tarleton. The Texans would make things interesting by closing the gap to three points, but CBU would not relinquish its lead and forced the fifth set with the 25-18 dominating result in the fourth set.
In the fifth and final set, Tarleton would begin the scoring with two quick points on the Megan Hodges service run. CBU would take its only lead of the frame at 5-4 off back-to-back points from Kali Wolf. Tarleton would reorganize after a timeout and outscore CBU 11-6 in the rest of the period to eke out the 3-2 victory in Riverside.
