STEPHENVILLE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team would extend its winning streak to three by trouncing the Tarleton Texans on the road in straight sets on Thursday evening.
The win gave CBU a 4-7 mark in Western Athletic Conference play and was the team's first road victory of the season. The win pushed CBU all the way to a tie for fifth place in the WAC standings, jumping Seattle U and Abilene Christian by a game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancers struck first in the critical road match, besting the Texans in extra points in the opening set. CBU would hold a lead as large as seven before the Texans roared back and sent the frame to extras. In the extra points session, Nicole Mauser and Kali Wolf would register clutch kills to fend off the comeback attempt and CBU the 1-0 lead.
The second set would be as contested as the first, with CBU jumping out to an early lead. The Texans would take over the advantage and take a 19-17 lead before CBU would rattle off three straight points to take the lead back. Mia Jerue would get the Lancers to set point with a huge swing before Wolf would end it on a beautifully placed ball in the back corner of the floor. Tarleton would challenge the ruling on the final point, but the play would stand, and CBU would take the 2-0 lead.
The Lancers would once again play comeback kids in the third set after falling behind 16-19 to the Texans. CBU would put on its rally caps and execute a 4-0 run that included two critical kills from Solia Angilau. CBU would press on the gas from there and score nine of the final eleven points to complete the comeback and sweep the Texans on the road.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
Wolf and Angilau were a dynamic duo for the Lancers in the sweep, combining for 24 kills. Wolf had 14 to pair with seven digs, while Angilau had a career-best ten kills and an incredibly efficient .714 hitting percentage. Amanda Darling continued to prove her savvy and relentless effort with 21 digs in the three-set match. Madison Gilliland continued her recent streak of terrific play with three solo blocks and six total blocks for the Lancer defense.
