WBB PREVIEW: Lancers Face Home/Away Action This Week
11/19/2024 4:19:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University women's basketball (0-3) will open a rare home doubleheader on Wednesday evening, welcoming San Diego State (4-0) to Riverside before the men host Northern Colorado at 7:30 p.m. Following their second home contest of the season, the Lancers will be back on the road, headed to the Pacific Northwest to take on the University of Portland on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
The Lancers are coming off a tough loss to a much-improved Pepperdine squad last Saturday, 75-64. Late rallies by the home team got the game within five points twice in the fourth quarter, but the Lancers were unable to finish the comeback before the final horn.
Grace Schmidt is in midseason form already after missing most of last season due to an early knee injury. The redshirt sophomore dominated the paint, scoring a career-high 34 points in 38 minutes of work on 13-19 (68.4%) shooting from the floor and 8-11 (73%) from the foul line. Schmidt wasn't the only Lancer to put up a career number on Saturday as Anaiyah Tu'ua nearly notched her first double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-best nine assists.
SDSU AT A GLANCE
The Aztecs are off to a hot start, staying undefeated through four games, three of which were at home in Viejas Arena. Their one close call so far came from a UC Davis team that took them to overtime in the year's second game. SDSU eventually managed to secure the 83-77 victory, but a pair of 26-point efforts from Aggie teammates kept it close.
The Aztecs are a stout team past their starting five, as SDSU boasts 32.5 points per game from their bench. They also are an efficient team, shooting 43.9% as a unit, with their top three scores post averages of 64.7%, 52.9%, and 69.2%, respectively.

PORTLAND AT A GLANCE
The Pilots will face off with WAC foe Seattle U before welcoming the Lancers but start the week with a 2-0 record against Division I opponents. They've earned double-digit wins over Hawaii and Eastern Washington behind Maisie Burnham, who is averaging 20 points per DI contest so far this year.
On paper, the Pilots share similarities with the Aztecs, as Portland currently gets 32.7 points per game from their bench, but those numbers might be a bit inflated due to a 67-point blowout of NAIA Corban University in which no starter played more than 19 minutes. Regardless of the opponent, any team scoring 86 points per game while shooting 47.3% and 36.1% from the field and distance, respectively, should be taken very seriously. That sentiment is intensified when one remembers that this Pilots squad made the NCAA Tournament last year and hung tough with 4-seed Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas, before the Wildcats secured the 78-65 victory.
