RIVERSIDE - The annual California Baptist University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee food drive literally collected tons of food last night during the Lancer basketball doubleheader. Local Riverside residents in need will have a massive surge of assistance this holiday season after CBU SAAC collected over 8,000 cans of food to donate, cautiously estimated to be over two-and-a-half tons in total.
Each team's SAAC representatives spearheaded the effort, in addition to plenty of generous contributions from public visitors attending the games. CBU Cheer was far and away the leading contributor, with an overall total of 5,186 cans donated. Even with such an extensive roster, 62 student-athletes in total, they also donated the most cans per-SA basis, with just over 83 cans per cheerleader. The top five participating teams came from the women's side, with Women's Golf, Dance, Softball, and Women's Soccer all bringing in between 300 and 1,044 cans. Men's Golf paced the Lancer men with their 10 SAs, bringing in 250 cans.
CBU partnered with Feeding America on this effort. Last night's haul will be spread amongst dozens of local food pantries and relief organizations.
