RIVERSIDE - For the second game in a row, a California Baptist University women's basketball player put up a career-high scoring effort in a losing effort. Anaiyah Tu'ua set a new career mark with 26 points against San Diego State on Wednesday night, but the Aztecs would leave with the win after a 78-66 final score. CBU is still searching for its first win after four games, while the Aztecs remain undefeated after five.
The opening quarter saw an invigorated Lancer squad take an early lead and play the Aztecs to a one-point deficit after 10 minutes, with Tu'ua, Grace Schmidt, and Shawnee Nordstrom accounting for all 19 points.
The Aztecs would outscore the Lancers by seven in the second and third quarters, building their cushion for the eventual 12-point margin. Tu'ua would pour in 11 of her 26 in the fourth quarter, including CBU's final eight points. Schmidt missed posting her first double-double of the year by two points but came up big in the post, grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds on Wednesday. Emma Johansson put up a complete stat line against SDSU, pitching in 14 points, seven rebounds, three blocks, and two steals.
While a 100% conversion rate would not have given the Lancers the win, the 58% free throw shooting (15-26) will likely be an emphasis in practice this week. And while SDSU didn't win the offensive rebound contest by a huge margin,13-9, the difference in converting those second chances into points was more heavily in the Aztecs' favor, to the tune of 14-5.
The Lancers will head back to Oregon this weekend to face the Pilots of the University of Portland on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
