EUGENE, OR - California Baptist University women's basketball took on an Oregon Ducks team who added a lot this offseason and protected their home court tonight in a 93-63 victory over the Lancers. Tonight's result marks the first time CBU has started a season 0-1 since the first year of Division I action, however, never before have the Lancers faced an opponent of such quality to begin a season.
Every Lancer that dressed out for the game saw action tonight, led in the scoring column by the reliable veteran Grace Schmidt, who poured in a team-high 16 points, and promising transfer Emma Johansson, who posted her first collegiate double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshmen CeCe Legaspi and Shawnee Nordstrom proved they were ready for the big stage in their collegiate debut. Legaspi scored six points on 2-3 shooting, and Nordstrom tallied a strong all-around first statline of five points, three rebounds, and three assists. Claudia Fiel led the Lancers with a career-high five assists.
The Ducks used three big runs in the first quarter to build their lead early, and emphasized that lead when they closed out the second quarter on a 13-2 run. CBU came out of the halftime break and posted their best offensive frame of the night, putting up 18 points on 58.3% shooting from the field and 40.0% shooting from range. The Lancers would close the gap to as low as 20 in the fourth, but Oregon had one more run in them to reach the final score.
The Lancers will stay on the road for their next game, a cross-country trek to Lynchburg, Virginia, to take on Liberty University. The Flames will open their season on Thursday against 11th-ranked Duke in Lynchburg.
