RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team is preparing for a loaded week of volleyball, with three matches in five days as the regular season nears its conclusion.
The Lancers split their last week of action, sweeping Tarleton convincingly on the road in Stephenville and falling in four sets to the top-seeded UT Arlington Mavericks at the College Park Center. CBU heads into the busy week 4-8 in conference play and sixth in the Western Athletic Conference standings. The Lancers are two games ahead of the dreaded ninth spot, which is the threshold of earning a place in the conference tournament.
The Lancers start their week with their final conference road trip of the year as they head north to Seattle to face the Redhawks on Thursday evening at the Redhawk Center. CBU took care of business in the first matchup in Riverside, sweeping SU by a total of 19 points over the three sets. CBU is 8-1 in its history with the Redhawks and has never lost in Seattle since the two became conference opponents in 2018. In the previous matchup, CBU found success setting the middle, with Madison Gilliland recording a perfect hitting percentage on nine attacks. Kali Wolf and Nicole Mauser combined for 23 kills in the matchup as the Lancers recorded the win in straight sets.
On Saturday, the Lancers will celebrate its seniors as they welcome in Utah Tech for a matinee matchup. The Trailblazers have been one of the big surprises in the conference after being picked to include seven in the preseason poll. Utah Tech is currently in the second seed in the standings at 9-3 and is currently on a five-match winning streak. In the previous meeting, Utah Tech bested CBU in straight sets at the Burns Arena. CBU shot itself in the foot in that matchup, with 42 committed errors for the visiting team. CBU has faired well at Van Dyne Gym against UTU, boasting an 8-1 overall home record against the Trailblazers in the all-time series.
CBU will conclude the week with a Monday night matchup against Grand Canyon on November 11. The Lopes are tied with Utah Tech for second place in the standings and are winners of three straight. GCU will have home matches against Utah Tech and Seattle ahead of the Monday night clash in Riverside. Last time out, the Lancers were defeated handily in Phoenix by a total of 31 points. GCU's hitting efficiency was the catalyst for the win, hitting over .300 while the Lancers struggled at .106. CBU has dropped four straight to the Lopes, with its last win coming in 2021 at Van Dyne Gym.
