RIVERSIDE--- Morgan Witz led the California Baptist Women's Soccer team to their first win of the 2024 season after a second-half goal that secured a 1-0 victory against California State University, Northridge. The Lancers improve to a 1-0-0 record, while CSUN begins their season 0-1-0.
CBU out-shot the Matadors 8-3 in the first half in a slow start to the match. The first 45 minutes were a defensive battle on both sides of the pitch that saw just one corner kick for both teams. Coming on as a sub, Witz made an immediate difference in the tempo of the match and helped kick-start the offense for the Lancers. The forward started the second half and put CBU on the board in the first five minutes after breaking away with a shot that she rebounded with a header for her first goal of the 2024 season. Witz ended her day on the pitch with 59 minutes under her belt and six shots, two of which were on frame. Kaylee Hauck was also efficient on the attack for the Lancers, coming up with four shots and three on frame across her 68 minutes.
CSUN's best opportunity came in the 74th minute after a cross from the left side of the box managed to find a free Matador. However, starting goalkeeper Bella Lister showed off her capabilities and shuffled across her six-yard box to make the save with her leg, keeping CSUN scoreless. Lister ended her night between the posts with six saves, proving to be a critical piece to the Lancer's starting 11.
The 2024 opening day win is extra sweet for the Lancers after the squad fell to CSUN in 2022 during their home opener in a 2-1 battle. The teams are now even at 1-1 in the all-time series.
California Baptist returns to the pitch on Sunday, August 18th, as they welcome #23 USC for a 7 p.m. match. Don't miss a second of the action this season by purchasing CBU Women's Soccer Season Tickets here!
