WAIPAHU, HI--- The Lancers netted a pair of first-half goals on Sunday afternoon but would ultimately tie with the University of Hawaii 2-2 to conclude its road trip to the Aloha State.
The win brought the Lancers' record to even 2-3-1 on the young season, while the Rainbow Warriors of Hawaii would move to 1-3-2.
After a few recent games of sluggish offense, the Lancers shook off the early season rust with multiple scores in the first half for the first time this season. Hawaii native Nikki Mau made her homecoming count in a big way as she would strike first 15 minutes into the match off an assist from Ava Westlund. The offense remained hot as Westlund would find the net herself just five minutes later off a perfectly placed ball from Kaylee Hauck to take a commanding 2-0 lead into halftime.
The home team would come out of the locker room at halftime reorganized and would find their target for the first time in the 67th minute courtesy of Izzy Ayala. The Rainbow Warriors, similar to CBU in the first half, would not have to wait long for another ball to find its target as Cate Sheahan would score five minutes later to tie the ball game at two apiece and flip the momentum. The Lancer defense settled in from that point forward and thwarted a handful of attempts from the opposition to get the go-ahead score. Likewise, Hawaii did not allow the Lancers to break through its defense and steal one on the road, and the match would end in a 2-2 tie.
"The first half was the best soccer we've played all year. Our movement, touches, defending, decision making and finishing were all sharp. Second half, we were not as sharp in possession and the game turned into a very scrappy match with the fatigue of a long week on the road catching up with us," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "This was a good test for us playing fellow returning conference champions. We have a lot of positives on which to continue to build on. We're looking forward to getting home, rest up and get back to work on the training field".
NEXT: The Lancers return to CBU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, September 7, against Nevada for a 7 PM match.
