FORT COLLINS, CO— The California Baptist women's soccer team ended their two-game roadtrip on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to Colorado State at CSU Soccer Stadium. After an early goal secured the victory for the home team, CBU moves to 1-3-0 on the season and has yet to win a road match.
Nineteen minutes into the match the Lancers gave a free-kick just outside of the 18-yard box that ended up in the back of CBU's net after making its way through a heavily trafficked box. CSU dominated the first half offensively with ten shots, but the Lancers turned on the jets in the second and upped their urgency in the hopes of finding an equalizer. Ava Westlund came off the bench for CBU and brought an intensity to California Baptist's attack, taking on the CSU backline on her own multiple times.
"While disappointed with the score lines, we played very well for large portions of each game. We have a talented group with a lot of new players still coming together and this was an important trip to help prepare us for conference, and to see who can help us compete in WAC play," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Playing two top teams from the Mountain West and at altitude, our defense was very good despite not having our all-region center back, Taylor Summit. Our attack is still missing some key players to injuries that we hope to get back soon. I thought we played well enough for 6 points on this trip, but we need to be more consistent in our attack for 90 minutes. In the last game the altitude caught up with us, but I was proud of our teams grit and heart in the second half. We'll learn from this trip and begin preparing for our next opponent".
By the numbers, the Rams and Lancers were evenly matched on Sunday afternoon and the game looked very similar to last year's match-up in Riverside that yielded the same result in favor of CSU. The match totaled 24 fouls with CBU tallying 14 and both sides picking up a yellow card. The Rams were most efficient in the final third of the pitch, totaling six shots on goal and 10 corners.
The Lancers will return home to CBU Soccer Stadium ahead of welcoming San Jose State to Riverside for the first time on Thursday evening.
