NASHVILLE--- The California Baptist University women's volleyball closed out its weekend in Nashville with a matchup against #17 Arizona State, with the Sun Devils coming away with a 3-0 victory.
The match marked the first time in the DI era that CBU faced a ranked opponent and the first time it had ever faced a member of the BIG 12 conference. The loss drops CBU to 0-3 in the early season, while ASU remains unbeaten and claims the Lipscomb Invitational tournament title.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Sun Devils flexed its offensive prowess in the opening set, quickly building a 10-2 lead that would prove insurmountable for the Lancers. The Sun Devils would ride the early momentum to a dominating 25-6 opening set win. The Lancers would bounce back in the second set and keep ASU at arm's length through the entirety of the set. The Sun Devils would ultimately claim the set 25-18 with a late 5-1 run.
The final set was controlled early by the Lancers as they built up a 4-1 lead, highlighted by three straight points from Eliana Posada. However, just like the first few sets, the Sun Devils ranked offense would prove to be too much and would ultimately claim the final set 25-13 to go unbeaten in the Lipscomb Invitational.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
For a third-straight match, Posada would lead the team in kills, registering eight in three sets of action. Starting libero, Amanda Darling continued to impress in her first season with CBU, adding in seven digs and two assists, and would be named to the All-Tournament team.
NEXT: The Lancers will turn their eyes to the Hawkeye Invitational, where they will open up against Delaware on Friday, September 5, at 4 PM PT.
