CORALVILLE, IA--- The California Baptist University women's volleyball team opened the Hawkeye Invite against Delaware in the team's second road tournament of the new campaign. The Lancers ultimately fell to the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Champions in three sets in Xtream Arena.
The loss drops the Lancers to a 0-4 start away from Riverside and brings Delaware to a 2-1 start to its 2024 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Blue Hens claimed the opening set handily, fueled by a 7-1 mid-set run that forced Head Coach Branden Higa to call a timeout and would ultimately put the match out of reach for the Lancers. Delaware's offense would come out hot in the second set, quickly building a 14-6 lead before a CBU timeout stalled momentum. The Lancers would come back with seven of the next nine points to flip the script and force the Delaware timeout. Delaware responded with a 3-0 run to ride out the 25-19 victory.
CBU took command to begin set three, building a lead that was as large as three points. Delaware registered seven of the next eight points on the scoreboard, only to be countered by the Lancers scoring nine of the next 12 to take a two-point lead. The Blue Hens would get to match point at 24-22, but CBU would score on consecutive possessions, including a Madison Gilliland kill that sent the match to extra points. CBU got to set point at 26-25 off a Delaware error, but the Blue Hens would score the final three points to claim the match.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
New transfers Kali Wolf and Gilliland led the attack for CBU, with a combined 17 kills and efficient hitting numbers. Emery DeJong got her first career start as an outside hitter and would post five kills, five digs, and three blocks for the Lancers.
NEXT: The Lancers will continue at the Hawkeye Invite as they take on host Iowa on Saturday, September 7, at 4:30 PM PT in Coralville, IA.
