RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team opened up its home schedule with a battle against its crosstown rival, the UC Riverside Highlanders. The Highlanders would emerge victorious in the match, winning in four sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancers came out strong, building up a 16-13 lead to force an early UCR timeout. The Highlanders would cut the lead to two, but CBU would close them out with an Eliana Posada kill and an error from UCR to make it 25-21 in favor of the home team. UCR would avenge the opening set loss by leading as many as nine points in the second set and would ride it to a 25-16 victory to tie the match.
The Highlanders would ride their momentum from the second set into the third set and would eventually pull out a 25-13 win to take the match lead. The fourth set was controlled early by the Lancers, as they would score seven of the first nine points to force a UCR timeout. The Highlanders would creep back into the match slow but surely and used a 9-2 run to even the score at 20 and force Head Coach Branden Higa to use both of his timeouts. Following the timeouts, the two Riverside squads would go back and forth to send the match into extra points. UCR and CBU would both have opportunities at set point, but the Highlanders would score the final two points of the set and take the victory 28-26.
