RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team began its final tournament of the non-conference schedule with a match against the Cal State Fullerton Titans on Friday evening. The Titans would earn the victory in straight sets as day one of the WAC/Big West Challenge came to an end.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancers jumped out to a 4-1 advantage early on the Titans, but CSUF erased that deficit in haste with a 4-0 run of their own to take the lead. After regaining the lead, the Titans would not relinquish it in the opening frame, riding out the 25-20 victory. Set two was much more hotly contested with neither team able to take a lead larger than three for the majority of the period. Fullerton would get to set point at 24-19, however the Lancers would rally with a 4-0 run to get within one point and force a Titans timeout. Fullerton would not allow it to get to extra points and would execute the final point to take the 2-0 match lead.
The final frame was a lopsided affair, with the Titans jumping out to an early 6-1 lead that they would add to as the set waned. The Lancers would make a small push to get within two at 10-8, but Fullerton would proceed to go on a 14-6 run to finish the set and match in their favor.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
Eliana Posada, as she often has been, was the leading point scorer for CBU with 11, followed closely by Kali Wolf with 10. Madison Gilliland turned in another solid performance with six kills on 12 attacks and led the team with 1.5 blocks.
NEXT: The Lancers will continue in the WAC/Big West Challenge with a battle against UC Irvine on Saturday, September 21, at 6 PM to wrap up non-conference play.
