RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team will open up conference play this week with a pair of matchups against Utah Valley and UT Arlington.
The opening Western Athletic Conference match will be against Utah Valley in the program's annual Dale E. & Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center match on Thursday evening. The Wolverines enter the matchup with the second-best record in the conference after a 9-3 non-conference finish that includes wins over Utah State and Boise State. CBU has bested the Wolverines in the previous two matchups, including a four-set victory in Riverside last season. The Events Center has been a great home-court advantage for the Lancers, with CBU holding a 3-2 record in the venue.
The second matchup of conference opening week will be against the top team in the WAC, UT Arlington. The Mavericks have been rolling in their non-conference schedule, boasting a conference-leading 10-2 record. UTA will open up conference play at Grand Canyon on Thursday evening before making the trek to Riverside for a Saturday afternoon match. CBU is 1-2 against the Mavericks in the program's limited all-time series versus another. CBU lost both matchups last season to the Mavericks, with their lone win coming in the first-ever encounter with UTA in 2022 in Arlington.
The Lancers finished conference play 7-9 last season before being bested by eventual champion Grand Canyon in Orem, Utah in the WAC Tournament. CBU will look to improve that mark from a season ago and will be led by seniors Eliana Posada and Kali Wolf, who paced the Lancers in kills in the non-conference slate. Posada led the team with 88 kills over 11 matches while also ranking third on the team in blocks with 22.0.
