CBU Falls to Tournament Host Iowa on Day Two from Coralville

CORALVILLE, IA--- The California Baptist University women's volleyball team competed against its first-ever BIG 10 opponent as they battled Iowa on the second day of the Hawkeyes Invite. The host school would earn the three-set victory over the Lancers to push them to a 3-1 start on the season.
Meanwhile, CBU is still searching for its first victory of the season after falling to an 0-5 start amid a tough opening non-conference schedule.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was all Hawkeyes out of the gate, as the tournament host would gain an early five-point advantage. The Lancers were forced to call both of its timeouts to attempt to halt Iowa's momentum, but the BIG 10 foe would score five of the final seven points to claim the opening set 25-17. The second set was far more competitive, with the Lancers holding a lead as large as three. Iowa would erase the deficit and build a three-point lead of its own at 20-17. CBU would get within one at 22-21, but the Hawkeyes would finish off the Lancers with a 3-1 run.
CBU controlled much of the third set, amassing a lead as large as four at 12-8. The Hawkeyes would chip away at the Lancer lead and take its first lead of the match at 20-19 apiece to force a CBU timeout. With momentum swinging, the Lancers would put together back-to-back scoring possessions to regain the lead at 21-20. Iowa would score five unanswered points to claim the set and the match.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
Nicole Mauser and Emery DeJong were the team leaders in kills with eight, followed by Anna Jackson, who had five in her first start of the season. Mia Jerue, who made the start at libero, was a Swiss army knife for the Lancers with a team-high 14 digs to go along with five assists and two service aces.
