CORALVILLE, IA--- On the final day of the Hawkeye Invite, the California Baptist University women's volleyball team battled San Jose State in the program's first-ever meeting with the NorCal squad. IT would be the Spartans who would claim victory, doing so in three sets.
The Spartans came into the matchup unbeaten and would stay that way, moving its record to 5-0 with the win. CBU is still searching for its first win of 2024 and will drop to 0-6 on the road.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Spartans jumped all over the Lancers in the opening set, playing near flawless volleyball, and would claim the set 25-5 to open the match. The second set was far more competitive, with Eliana Posada and Emery DeJong helping the Lancers rally from an early deficit to take the lead at 18-14 to force a San Jose State timeout. Posada and DeJong would provide much-needed efficiency on the outside for the Lancers and would get CBU to match point at 24-22. San Jose St. would score the final four points to take the commanding 2-0 lead.
CBU would once again hold the early advantage in the third set, scoring the first six points of the set. The lead for CBU would balloon to as many as nine points, but San Jose State would not go away that easily. The Spartans would regroup following a timeout and score nine of the next 11 points to force a pair of Lancer timeouts. The Spartan run would send the set to extra points, where Posada would draw first blood and set up set point for CBU. San Jose would execute its offense on the final two possessions and take the set 27-25 to claim the match.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
Posada was the driving force of the CBU offense once again off the bench, with 11 kills for the Lancers. DeJong provided similar energy off the pine with seven kills on 16 attacks to pair with three digs. Mia Jerue, once again starting at libero, would record 18 digs to pair with six assists and an ace.
