Swim and Dive Split Results in Phoenix, Men Earn Convincing Win over Lopes

PHOENIX - California Baptist University swim and dive teams battled Grand Canyon University in Phoenix on Saturday, with the men earning the 164-136 victory while the women fell to the Lopes 175-124.
The men claimed victories in 12 of the 17 contested events led by Mark Kovacsics, who won three races on his own, and Remi Fabiani, who won the 100 Free and was the lead legion a pair of relay wins. Gael Jimenez swept the diving action on Saturday with relative ease according to his standards, posting scores of 359.40 and 364.80 in the 1-and-3 1-and-3-meter events, respectively.
Adding to their team win, the CBU men replaced four pool records at Fr Edward A. Reese Aquatic Center. The 200 medley and 200 free relays cleared the previous best times by over a full second. Kovacsics and Fabiani each set one new pool record individually, with Kovacsic rewriting history in the 1,000 free. At the same time, Fabiani now holds the top spot in one of his premier races, the 100 free.
The women took five victories on the day, including the 200 free relay. Kai Flanagan was the women's only multi-event winner, taking both distance races, the 500 and 1,000 free events. Sofia Maksimova won her 50-free race with ease, tying the pool record of 22.71 in the process. Freshman diver Jade Fontenelle claimed the only diving win for the women on Saturday, taking the top spot in the 1-meter event with a score of 248.10.
The Lancers will turn their focus to their final dual of the season in La Jolla against UC San Diego on January 25.
