OREM, UTAH - California Baptist University women's basketball traveled to the Beehive State for a one-off conference road match against Utah Valley to wrap up the season series against the Wolverines. The two teams stood on defense on Thursday night, with UVU eventually prevailing by a score of 59-50. The Lancers fall to 3-2 in Western Athletic Conference play, while Utah Valley improves to 4-2 in league play.
CeCe Legaspi and Nhug Bosch Duran led the charge in the low-scoring affair with 11 points each. Early foul trouble for Emma Johansson meant added minutes for Legaspi, which paid off in the form of a career-high nine rebounds. Anaiyah Tu'ua made her return to the lineup after missing a handful of games while on the mend from a hand injury; she added four points, three assists, and three rebounds off the bench.
The first half was a grind-out defensive battle that ended 11-7 after the first ten minutes and 28-20 by the halftime horn. The Lancers held UVU without a made three-pointer for the entire first half and turned them over 11 times, thanks in large part to eight Lancer steals.
After the break, it was a different story as UVU pressed the action and closed out the third quarter on a 15-0 run to take a five-point lead going into the fourth quarter. The final frame saw little give from the Wolverines, who held that five-point lead until midway through the fourth when they slowly started to pad the lead until the final horn.
CBU is back home this Saturday to host the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Fowler Events Center.
